Car Hoist Equipment – BBM Railway Equipment

BBM has recently expanded our product offerings to now include both rail car and truck hoist equipment. These custom-engineered hoist systems let you choose from a wide selection of synchronized mechanical screw lift components, gear ratios, controls and power options – as a result, all hoist systems are tailored to your specific configuration and capacity specifications. Our car hoists are designed for a variety of car types, from single units, married pairs and articulated cars. In addition, our hoist systems support a broad range of lift height, weight and vehicle dimensions. We even design lifts to accommodate multiple vehicle types on the same lift systems. Installations are customized to each specific set of fleet, customer and installation requirements. System pre-assembly and testing at our factory translates into significantly higher quality for all hoist systems installed at our customer’s facilities.

These systems all feature high quality mechanical assemblies, a custom engineered electrical control system and remote diagnostic assistance is also available as an option for the most efficient machine support in the industry.

Truck Repair Hoist

Truck repair hoists are an efficient and convenient option to elevate the truck assembly to an ergonomic height for maintenance and/or repair work to be performed on truck assemblies. BBM truck repair hoists are available in shallow-pit or deep-pit configurations with a two-post or a four-post design, depending on the specified capacity.

Straight Rail Car Hoist System

Straight rail car hoist systems lift the vehicle directly below the hoist system running rails, which generates a simpler mechanical system. When straight rail systems are specified, a truck turntable must be incorporated with the design (between car hoist pits) so that when a married pair of vehicles are lifted, the inner trucks (closest to the car coupling) can be removed and taken out from underneath the vehicle without the need to lower the outer trucks (furthest from the car coupling).

C-Frame Car Hoist System

C-frame car hoist systems are designed to allow a dismounted truck assembly to be passed under a raised railcar, regardless of the location that it was removed from. This eliminates the need for a turntable between car hoist pits because the inner trucks can be rolled out from underneath the vehicle below the outer trucks when the vehicle is in the raised position. While the running rails are elevated, the truck assembly rides on the integrated rails of the center pit cover which supports the truck assembly wheels on the flange, rather than the tread. When the rails are in the lowered position, the railcars and truck assemblies ride on the running rails and are supported normally by the tread of the wheel.

Shallow Pit Car Hoist

BBM designs, manufactures, and installs shallow pit car hoists that reduce excavation, construction, and installation costs compared to deep pit designs. This is particularly beneficial in high-water areas where deep pits require extensive drainage systems. Maintenance for shallow pit hoists is simpler and cheaper due to enclosed screw systems lubricated with continuous oil bath, doubling the lifespan of nuts and screws compared to exposed screw designs. Shallow pits also mitigate damage from debris and eliminate confined space maintenance issues defined by OSHA. Transit authorities increasingly favor this design, available in conventional straight rail or C-frame configurations.

Deep Pit Car Hoist

BBM deep pit car hoist systems increase rail shop productivity by raising the railcar to an ergonomic height for maintenance, inspection and repair of the railcar as well as facilitating the truck removal process. The deep pit design allows access for maintenance personnel to service and maintain the equipment without the need to remove pit covers and lifting rails for access.
